The Discovering Math Camp is a virtual math enrichment program designed to introduce students in grades 6 to 8 to various areas of mathematics. Led by seasoned educators, our camp provides a nurturing environment where learners of all levels can cultivate their mathematical understanding and hone their problem-solving skills through immersive lessons, interactive activities, and collaborative challenges.
Students in grades 6 to 8 will be invited to participate in this camp. Students will be invited from as many different schools as possible. In particular, we will prioritize students who have access to fewer resources at home and in their community. Through this camp, we aim to increase access to mathematics enrichment resources to students from underserved communities.
Mathematics and computer science are powerful tools, and diversity among mathematicians and computer scientists increases the potential for positive impact. The CEMC strives to be inclusive and welcoming to participants of all gender identities, cultural backgrounds, and lived experiences.
These enrichment lessons will be held online over the March Break from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. EDT each day with help sessions in the afternoon between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. EDT.
This week-long enrichment workshop will provide students with a chance to work with instructors and other youth who share their interest in math and problem-solving. Participants will be presented with material and problem sets at each session. Some of the possible topics include counting problems with permutations and combinations, ratios and musical scales and introduction to computer science. To ensure an understanding of the material being presented, participants are strongly encouraged to work through and solve the problem sets presented at each session. We expect that the students attending are prepared to participate and work on the problems each day.
Applications will be accepted online from 9:00 a.m. EST on February 5, 2024 to 9:00 a.m. EST on February 12, 2024. Spots are limited and only those students who receive an acceptance email on or before February 14, 2024 will be invited to attend.
The Discovering Math Camp is completely free of charge.
