In October 2024, the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) announced the launch of an exciting new initiative called The Mathematician Mosaic.

This project allowed students to explore diverse voices by researching and designing a poster highlighting underrepresented individuals in the mathematical sciences.

In total we received over 80 thoughtful submissions from students around the world, and today we are proud to showcase the 18 selected posters chosen to be featured on our CEMC website.

“Through this project, I myself have learned about some new mathematicians and their contributions to STEM. I hope that by diving into the journeys of other mathematicians and learning about how these role models have overcome adversity, students realize their own potential to succeed in STEM.”

- Anila Yadavalli, Co-Lead, The Mathematician Mosaic Project

“I was truly impressed by the incredible posters the students created. Their submissions exceeded our expectations, showcasing both creativity and depth. I discovered so many fascinating facts about inspirational mathematicians, making the experience even more enriching.”

- Fiona Dunbar, Co-Lead, The Mathematician Mosaic Project

By celebrating the many influential figures within mathematical sciences in an educational and creative way, the hope is that students may be inspired seeing aspects of their identity represented within those who have made tremendous impacts within STEM fields.

“I hope that our first batch of highlighted posters not only showcases the diversity within our field and the challenges many individuals have faced but also serves as an opportunity for students to see themselves represented in mathematics."

- Sachin Kotecha, Co-Lead, The Mathematician Mosaic Project
