Course information

This course is organized into themes that group similar units together. As you move through the course, earlier concepts are combined with new material to help you see how topics are connected. The list of keywords in the table indicates the broad topics in each theme.

Keyword Broad Topics
A Algebra, Patterning, Relations
D Data Management, Probability, Statistics
G Geometry, Spatial Sense, Measurement,
Shape and Space
N Numeration, Numbers, Number Sense

The following units are covered in this course. The letter at the end of the unit's name indicates its theme.

  • Representing and Comparing Numbers (N)
  • Operations (N)
  • Data Collection and Graphs (D)
  • Bisectors and Properties of Shapes (G)
  • Representing Patterns (A)
  • Data Analysis (D)
  • Equations and the Pythagorean Theorem (A)
  • Ratios, Rates, and Proportions (N)
  • Probability (D)
  • Area, Volume, and Angles (G)
  • Transformation of Shapes (G)

To allow for as much flexibility as possible, this Courseware has been developed as a single course containing all Grade 7 and Grade 8 topics, generally following the Ontario mathematics curriculum. Within each unit, you can choose which topics to cover in Grade 7, Grade 8, or both, based on your curriculum guidelines. The lessons in a unit are grouped into two parts, Part A and Part B, which can be viewed as a division of grade level if desired.

Typical lesson structure

Each Courseware lesson normally corresponds to between one and three classroom lessons and consists of the sections below.

In this section, the information is presented using narrated slideshows and text. Key features throughout include the following interactive elements and learning aids:

  • Try This: Motivating questions at the beginning of a lesson with solutions provided later under Try This Revisited.
  • Explore This: Guided exploration to create or manipulate mathematical objects with an Explore This Summary to consolidate observations.
  • Check Your Understanding: Practice questions for students to answer online. Feedback is provided, and students can keep trying variations of the same question until they have mastered the concept.
  • Take It With You: Questions to motivate future learning without a provided answer or solution.
  • Alternative Format: This page is a text version of the video instruction and interactive elements.

Some of the questions and interactive explorations from the Watch section are reproduced here for quick access and to help reinforce the lesson goals.

This final section includes a set of extra problems for students to solve on paper, including full solutions. All the exercises, answers, and solutions in a unit are reproduced as the last item in the list of lessons for each unit.
