Workshop overview

The Exploring Mathematics and Computer Science (EMACS) workshop is held annually for students in Grade 11 who perform exceptionally well on the Fermat Contest and Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest. Since 2014, the CEMC has been hosting this week-long workshop that brings together top-performing students from across Canada for a stimulating experience centered around mathematics and computer science. Participants engage in advanced problem-solving, interact with peers who share similar intellectual interests, attend sessions hosted by distinguished faculty members and educators, and make new friends.

Workshop details

Grade 11 students from across Canada who exhibit strong performance on the Fermat Contest and Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest may be invited to apply to the EMACS workshop.

Participants stay on campus at the University of Waterloo for a week and attend lectures on mathematics and computer science, participate in advanced problem-solving sessions, and enjoy social time with peers. The workshop offers a unique platform to connect with highly skilled math students from all over Canada, along with esteemed faculty members, educators, and University of Waterloo students.

This workshop is offered in-person each Spring at the University of Waterloo. Participants stay on campus at the University of Waterloo and are chaperoned by university students, who will also stay on site. Most meals will take place at the residence eatery which offers a range of dietary options including vegetarian, vegan and halal meals. We do our best to accommodate all dietary needs.

Based on their performance on the Fermat Contest and Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest, students are selected and invited to apply for the EMACS workshop.  From the applications, approximately 30 students are selected and invited to register for and attend the workshop.

There is no fee to apply for the workshop. There is a $250 registration fee to be paid after selected applicants have received their confirmation package. This fee includes any applicable taxes, meals, travel expenses (if applicable), and accommodation. Financial support to cover the cost of the workshop may be arranged for students in need. For more information about financial support, please contact Fiona Dunbar.
