After 20 years as CEMC Director, Ian VanderBurgh will be stepping down at the end of June to begin an appointment as Associate Vice-President, focusing on Strategic Enrolment Management for the entire University of Waterloo. Ian will remain a faculty member in the CEMC and looks forward to continuing his efforts towards a variety of activities in the CEMC.
Jen Nelson, who has been the Associate Director at the CEMC for the last several years, steps into the role as Director on July 1. Jen's appointment was strongly supported by faculty and staff and has been approved by the CEMC Director Nominating Committee.
Since joining the CEMC as a faculty member in 2008, Jen has been a key member of the CEMC's leadership team. She has supported our Problem of the Week resource as a core member from its launch in 2010. Her passion and enthusiasm for all branches of CEMC programming has seen her lead various CEMC workshops, co-lead Math Circles, and travel both across Canada and internationally to help students discover the joy and real-world relevance of mathematics through problem solving.
“I am thrilled that Jen will be the new CEMC Director. She is a superb mathematician, an excellent educator, and an even better person. I look forward to working with Jen in her new role as she leads the CEMC team in its mission to increase interest, enjoyment, confidence, and ability in mathematics and computer science among learners and educators in Canada and internationally.”
