Course information
Learners will build a strong understanding of key math concepts including number sense, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, algebraic thinking, and data literacy. Along the way, they will also strengthen their reasoning, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Lessons are organized by strand, but the resources are designed to help learners make meaningful connections across different areas of mathematics. Learners will regularly revisit and combine concepts from multiple strands to develop deeper, more flexible understanding of math and how it applies in different contexts.
See the Grade 4/5/6 Courseware: Sequencing Suggestion document for a recommended lesson order.
Typical lesson structure
Each lesson offers coordinated learning opportunities for Grades 4, 5, and 6 and is designed to support one to three classroom periods. Designed with flexibility in mind, every lesson is organized into five key components.
Begin the lesson with an open-ended problem that encourages learners to share their ideas, draw on what they already know, and get ready for new learning. Accompanying guiding questions help spark meaningful mathematical discussions, uncover student thinking, and build connections to the lesson's focus.
A narrated video introduces the new concept and walks students through the learning step by step. Using clear explanations, visual models, and examples, the video helps students build understanding, make connections, and feel confident as they explore new ideas.
Learners can check their understanding through an interactive online activity that provides immediate feedback. With multiple versions of each question to explore, students have opportunities to practise, learn from feedback, and build confidence as they develop their understanding.
Learners apply their understanding by working through a practice problem. If they need support getting started or become stuck along the way, optional step-by-step hints are available to guide their thinking without giving away the solution.
Ready for a challenge? This enrichment problem invites learners to take their thinking further by exploring the concept in a new way. These tasks encourage deeper understanding, creative problem solving, and the discovery of connections across mathematical ideas.
For Teachers
A dedicated teachers section accompanies every lesson, providing support with key concepts and common misconceptions. In addition, each grade includes a collection of curriculum-specific resources, including:
- Ready-to-use worksheets featuring skill-building practice and Think It Through problems that encourage mathematical reasoning and deeper understanding.
- Low-prep games that require minimal materials and provide quick, effective opportunities to reinforce concepts, build fluency, and consolidate learning.
- Inquiry-based investigations thoughtfully integrated throughout the program to promote exploration, deepen conceptual understanding, and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills.
